Life Update: Summer Break Plans

This summer so far has been, and is going to be, the busiest summer yet. After finishing my sophomore year of high school with a stressful week of finals, I didn't get any breaks. I moved straight into the next week (this past week) with more classes. Drivers-ed. Anyone that has taken drivers-ed before would understand when I say that it is the most annoying and boring thing ever. The class consists of long lectures, bad quality movies from the 80's, and a really awkward social environment. Luckily the classes only take up about half the day, so there is still sometime to enjoy the break. But this past week the weather has been unbearably hot and I spent most of my free time packing for camp.
That takes me to the main point of this post. On sunday, in 2 days, I will be going of to camp for 2 months. I have been going to the same camp for seven years now and I love every minute of it. I love my friends, the activities, the energy and just overall the whole experience.
What this means though, is that since I will be away for so long, I won't be able to blog. Two months will go by until I can add anything to this website. But, what I will be doing is coming up with a ton of ideas and planning what the fall is going to look like for Sixteen Once. I will ask around for some feedback, and I will definitely take a ton of pictures at camp. The possibilities are endless!
By the time I get back it will already be the end of the summer which means that if I do any summer look book type of posts they won't be very relevant anymore. I might do one when I get back but I will try and figure something out that will be more interesting and current to read.
Now that you have read this far you are probably sick of me just going on and on about my life, so here are some photographs I took last summer. They will give you a look at what I do and where I go, and also probably will look very similar to what photos will look like this coming summer. Before you see them thought, keep in mind that they are really old and my photography style has changed and I look kinda different so don't judge :P

DIY: Custom Laptop Skin

I recently had to throw out my laptop case because it was beginning to crack and got really dirty. I also threw it out because I started to get tired of the plain blue case I had before, so I decided to try something more creative.
A couple weeks ago, I stumbled upon a video on youtube that somebody made explaining how she made her laptop skin. It seemed like a really cool idea so I decided to go for it. The website I used is called DecalGirl Which does custom skins for all types of devices. On the website you can upload any photo you like and the prices are pretty affordable, especially since they give you a 15% off coupon if you sign up with your email.
I made a collage on photoshop, instead of just choosing one picture that would always be on my computer. For those who are familiar with photoshop, the dimensions advised by the website are 4992 (width) x 3328 pixels. If you don't have photoshop than some helpful alternatives to making a collage are GIMP, PicMonkey, or Paint (PC program). I can't explain these since I am not familiar with them, but the steps are really basic so each of these programs will have the capabilities.
After I made the collage all you have to do is follow the websites instructions, with is basically just picking the right device and uploading the picture.
One other really great thing about the website is that when you order the skin you can pay through amazon or PayPal (if you choose) and then the shipping is really quick.

Here is a 'step by step' in picture form (the collage part is for people using photoshop b/c that is what I used):

1. Open a new document in photoshop with the correct dimensions:

4992 (width) x 3328 pixels

2. Add photos and just have fun designing whatever you want.
my final collage turned out looking like this

3. Save as jpg.

(don't forget to flatten the image)

4. Go to website and click on 'Create Your Own' at the top of the page:

5. When you click on it, you will have to choose your device:

6. After that, I think the rest is pretty clear. then, days later you can enjoy the final product:

Whats in my Bag: Boston Calling Music Festival

This past weekend was the Boston Calling music festival, and I was lucky enough to go with two of my friends. The whole event was a new experienced, and I loved the whole thing.
For those of you who don't know, Boston Calling is a three day music festival filled with ranges of artists and bands. I only went to one of the three days, which officially started at 1:20 and then ended at 10:30.
Since I spent the whole day at the festival, I needed to pack efficiently with everything I needed  for the day, but it also all had to fit inside a small bag. So, in this blog post I am going to show you what I took with me to Boston Calling, and hopefully this will help if you ever find yourself stuck trying to figure out what to pack to a music festival (or any occasion similar).

#1

My Bag
I got this bag a couple of months ago from Urban Outfitters, and I have never stopped loving it. The color, although yellow, is toned down enough that it goes perfectly with every outfit no matter what I'm wearing. It was the perfect size for Boston Calling, because it both was small enough to be allowed into the event and it fits everything I need.

#2

Wallet
I feel like this is a pretty straight forward essential. You should always have your wallet on you, but especially in a situation where you can't bring food and would have to buy it during the day (food trucks were available).

#3

EpiPen
This is more just for me. I have allergies so I needed to take an EpiPen with me just incase anything were to happen.

#4

Tissues
Its allergy season and I have it bad. I was really worried that I would be sniffling throughout the whole day so I brought along two travel tissue packs just incase. Turns out I didn't really need them but it was smart to bring them along anyways.

#5
House Keys
Because, well you know, to get into my house. (I attached my Boston Calling wristband to it after the concert)

#6

iPhone/iPod
I brought along my brothers iPhone so that I would have a map just incase I needed to get somewhere, but then I also brought along my iPod so that I could take photos.

#7

Fuji instax Camera
I brought my new instant camera, because I really wanted to use it. The photo came out so well and I am definitely going to take a ton more with it.

#8

Tickets
Obviously if you are going to a concert you are going to need to bring your tickets, otherwise you won't be able to get in.

#9

Floppy Hat
This wasn't actually in my bag, I wore it for most of the day, but I think that wearing a hat is a super great item to make your festival outfit casual but still look really cool. Plus, you will be super comfy all day, and be focused on the event instead of your outfit.

(This is the only good picture I had of me in the hat, but basically I was wearing it along with a solid black shirt from the brand Splendid, a pair of distressed jeans that I DIY-ed and white converse. It was super cute and comfy.)

Helpful Tips: How to Create Your Daily Outfit

Life comes with many struggles. A lot of them revolve around physical appearance, like making sure your hair looks good, your face is clean and especially that your outfit is trendy and/or stylish. When I have to pick out my outfit for the day, there are a few things I keep in mind that make that decision a whole lot easier, and keep me from just wearing the same boring outfit all the time. I hope that these tips will help some of you to burst out of the habit of wearing the same things and kindle your creativity, because that is what being stylish is all about.

Tip #1: Check to see what the weather will be that day

What you wear, should not only look good but be functional. If you really want to wear that new skirt you just got but it is cold and rainy outside, maybe save the skirt for another day and wear pants instead. from that decision you just came up with two outfits (one for now and one for later). Also if you know what the weather is going to be going into the day, than you can eliminate a whole category of clothing not suitable for that weather. (P.S. there is a super handy weather app on all iPhones)

Tip #2: Pick one item you really want to wear

The second thing you should do after you know what the weather is like, is choose one garment that you are leaning towards and build the rest of the outfit around that. It doesn't necessary have to be a top, it could be pants, shoes or even an accessory.

Tip #3: Find your style icon

(I love Emma Watson)

When creating an outfit I usually have an image in my head of what somebody else wore. Your style icon could be a celebrity but it could also be just someone you noticed on the street and really liked what they were wearing. This is super helpful for building on to tip #2 because you can replicate an outfit already created with the items you own.

Tip #4: Search for something old

A great way for finding something to wear if your stuck wearing the same things over and over again, is by finding something you haven't worn in a while and try to incorporate that into your outfit.

Tip #5: Your Outfit doesn't have to be complicated

I feel like one really huge reason that people stress out about their outfits is because they think that a fashionable outfit has to be complicated and full of accessories and everything. The truth is, a simple outfit can be stylish too. Don't overthink what you wear because even simple basics can look amazing. But this leads me to the next and final tip...

Tip #6: The hair makes the outfit

Your hair is just as important as the rest of your outfit, if not more important. It is really important to have a hairstyle that coordinates with what you wear, like if you are wearing a top that is very busy I would suggest putting your hair up and vice versa. Also don't be afraid to be creative with your hairstyles. One of my pet peeves is when one person styles their hair the same way everyday. I know it is hard to find multiple hair styles that look good on you but the more times you take risks, the more likely it is that you will find what you like (that goes for clothing too).

Music Cravings: Ingrid Michaelson - Lights Out

Most of my posts so far have focused more on my hobbies for beauty, fashion and photography. But there is a whole other part of me that I have never gotten to blog about. I LOVE TO SING! Along with my passion to sing I also love listening to music, as I can assume most people do. I like to think that there is a specific genre of music that I particularly love, but, the truth is I basically love any song I can keep a beat to.

Since there are so many artists and songs that I love I thought that it might be enjoyable if I chose one to talk about in each post under the segment "Music Cravings" and review it for you all.

My current craving: Ingrid Michaelson's new album 'Lights Out'

I have only really heard this album of hers, and her older album 'Be Ok'. I bought her new album mostly because I absolutely loved her older one and couldn't wait to hear more, but also because I am going to her concert in the beginning of June and wanted to learn the songs before then. 'Lights Out' has a couple of songs that are very similar to what she has done before. Her older songs were very slow and acoustic and the same goes for a couple of her new songs such as 'Wonderful Unknown' and 'Everyone Is Gonna Love Me Now'. Because of this, I was a bit worried that her concert wouldn't be so exciting, but my worries went away after I bought the album and learned that Ingrid has added more upbeat tunes and uses interesting musical techniques that make her music more entertaining and fun to listen to rather than making you cry after hearing her sad breakup songs. Examples for songs like that are 'War Path' and 'Time Machine' witch are probably my favorites of hers at the moment.

In summery, While there are a few of Ingrid's trademark intimate breakup songs here, overall the album reveals her to be in a bright, upbeat state of mind. When I sit on the bus to and from school you will definitely find me listening (and humming) to any one of the songs on her new album. THEY ARE ALL AMAZING!!

What do you think of her new album?

Favorites: March

It is already April and "spring has sprung!" I am a person who LOVES warm weather so I can't even explain how happy I am that it is going to begin being sunny and warm outside. The only problem about it being spring is that all the great winter items that we all love and cherish, will not be usable anymore.

I made a list of some things that I have been loving this past winter. Most of which are things that I am going to continue to use/wear but a couple things are out of season and I will have to wait, almost, a whole year till I can use/wear them again :(

anyways here they are:

#1. Velvet Scrunchies
These scrunchies are super wintery. Velvet was very 'in' this winter so I took it upon myself to have at least one item that was made out of velvet. When I first saw these I fell absolutely in love with them and ended up buying three in different colors. They are the perfect thickness and size for my big curly hair.

*American Apparel

#2. Short Gold Necklaces
I have always went through different jewelry phases. At one point I was obsessed with silver rings and at another time (probably a hand full of years ago) I was obsessed with crazy earrings. But, now I have a thing for short gold necklaces. I'm always afraid that I will change my obsession soon so I never buy too many of one thing, so I bought 3...but then I lost one so the picture is only of 2 of them. I wear these necklaces with basically all my outfits b/c gold goes with everything...except silver. I will never mix gold and silver.

*Circle: Topshop
*Floral half circle: Urban Outfitter

#3. Plaid Scarf
On my trip to London (you can see detail in my earlier posts) We stopped in a Scottish little boutique one night. It sold tons of woven, cashmere, and wool clothing. During my trip I was paying very close attention to the clothing people wore b/c I am really trying to figure out how to define my style and how it evolves. While people watching I noticed a trend which was that tons of people wore big plaid scarves and when we entered the store I knew I just had to get one.
I wear this scarf all the time, wether its just outside in the cold or to make a simple outfit more 'European'. I think that is what my style is. European.
I will be sad to let this scarf go for the season.

*Local store in London (I don't remember the name)

#4. Moisturizer
This is my favorite moisturizer that I have ever used. I use it in the morning after I wash my face and sometimes I may use it at night. It really keeps my face moisturized and soft all day. With it on, my skin is never to oily or to dry. Its perfect!

*Nuxe

#5. Glutino Wafers
My mom and I are trying out a gluten free and dairy free diet. That means that a lot of the super delicious and also super unhealthy foods are out of the equation (like pizza...). B/c my mom is always looking for alternatives to those foods we end up always having different weird snacks in our pantry. But these wafers are one thing that always seems to stay put. Its probably not the best thing b/c I always have something to snack on but seriously, they are so good. Even my siblings who aren't keeping my diet love them.

*Glutino: Whole Foods

#6. My Daily Mascara Routine
Every morning after doing certain essential face prepping, I finish off my makeup with three steps. Curling my eyelashes, thickening my eyelashes, and the lengthening my eyelashes. The three products that I use are amazing at what they do. I have to admit that I am not the best at putting on mascara and end up smudging it a bit on my eyelid, but the results that these products accomplish are totally worth it. My lashes are big and bold (not to bold) and last all day long.

*Curler: Sephora
*Thickening Mascara: Almay, from your local drug store.
*Lengthening: Great Lash- Maybelline, also your local drug store

What winter items will you be missing?
